Eastern Hospital was opened in 1993, which was named after Lady Youde, the wife of Sir Edward Youde. Besides, Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital, formerly located in Mid-levels, was planned to migrate to Tai Po. Hospital facilities was then send into Eastern Hospital temporarily until their new buildings in Tai Po was opened in 1997. Therefore, Eastern Hospital was named Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital when it was opened.
The former Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital was located at Bonham Road, Mid-Levels, which was the first hospital in Hong Kong offering western medicine to the Chinese community. It was incorporated from Nethersole Hospital, Alice Memorial Maternity Hospital and Ho Miu Ling Hospital in 1954.
